Soil Remediation
Our priority is to protect public health and the environment by ensuring the safe and compliant remediation and restoration of soil contaminated with hazardous substances and to conquer expansive soil.
Expansive Soil & Hazardous Soil Remediation Services
Understanding Expansive Soil
Expansive or swelling soil is a highly malleable soil typically rich in montmorillonite and other active clay minerals. This type of soil presents a significant challenge, raising concerns among scientists regarding the design, protection, and maintenance of highways and structural systems. Expansive soils can be found in arid/semi-arid regions where even moderate expansiveness can lead to structural damage. The behavior of expansive soil is influenced by various factors, with moisture availability and the quantity and type of clay-size particles being the primary determinants.
It is important to note that changes in water content cause volume fluctuations in expansive soil, resulting in either swelling or shrinkage. Hence, expansive soils are often referred to as swell/shrink soils. Several techniques have been employed to modify soil characteristics or stabilize moisture conditions around foundations or pavements. These techniques fall into the following categories:
- Removal and Replacement
- Prewetting
- Chemical Admixtures
- Water Content Control
Prewetting of expansive soils has been utilized with varying degrees of success to reduce expansion potential. Chemical admixtures used for treating expansive soil can be categorized into traditional materials like hydrated lime, Portland cement, fly ash, and nontraditional chemical agents.
Understanding Hazardous Soil
Remediation services address sites that have been contaminated directly or indirectly, encompassing both the initial point of contamination and areas where contaminants have spread. Contaminants can be challenging to trace, especially when dealing with water contamination, which can spread widely.
In the realm of waste management, remediation refers to the process of reversing environmental damage. It involves the removal and cleanup of hazardous substances from four types of contaminated sites: groundwater, surface water, soil, and sediment.
Causes of Contamination
Contamination at sites can result from large-scale environmental incidents, such as industrial oil spills or hazardous waste emergencies. It can also stem from long-term, cumulative environmental degradation due to pollution, sewage, treatment plants, or industrial by-products.
Orion’s Remediation Efforts Cover:
Groundwater Remediation
Treating contaminated water beneath the earth’s surface, often cause by industrial spills, runoff, and landfill seepage. Remediation methods may include physical removal, chemical treatment, or biological interventions.
Surface Water Remediation
Removing pollutants from above-ground bodies of water, with remediation techniques similar to those used for groundwater.
Soil Remediation
Addressing soil contamination that affects agricultural and environmental health.
Sediment Remediation
Treating pollution in sediments that accumulate at the bottom of water bodies.
The ultimate goal of remediation is to eliminate and clean up contaminated sites to safeguard human health and the environment. Achieving this goal requires a well-planned, extensive remediation effort, followed by ongoing monitoring to ensure long-term effectiveness.
