Safe Lead Remediation Solutions
The dangers of lead-based paint—and more specifically, lead dust—have been well-documented for decades. Even minimal exposure, especially to children, can have severe effects on the central nervous system and brain development. At Orion, our priority is to minimize exposure to lead-contaminated environments through careful monitoring and safe removal practices.
If your property was built or renovated before 1980, there is a high likelihood that lead-based paint is present. Lead contamination can be found in both residential and commercial properties, regardless of location. Whether it’s a century-old home in a suburban neighborhood or an urban industrial building, lead-based paint is a common concern.
Partnering with Orion ensures that your project is handled with the highest standards of safety, reducing the risks of lead exposure and ensuring full compliance with remediation regulations.
Lead Remediation Methods
At Orion, we offer a range of lead remediation methods tailored to your project’s needs, ensuring safety, compliance, and cost-effectiveness.
Encapsulation
The most straightforward and cost-effective method, encapsulation involves applying a specialized coating to seal in lead-based paint, forming a watertight bond. However, over time, wear from regular use (such as opening and closing doors and windows) may weaken the coating.
Enclosure
This method involves covering the lead-containing surface with a new material, such as drywall or aluminum/vinyl cladding. While this approach is effective, it’s important to note that if the covering is removed, the underlying lead-contaminated surface will be exposed.
Removal
Lead-based paint removal requires a variety of careful techniques, including wire brushing or wet hand scraping with liquid removers. Certain methods—such as open flame burning, sanding without HEPA attachments, abrasive blasting, and power washing without proper containment—are strictly prohibited due to the risk of harmful lead dust exposure.
Replacement
In cases where removal isn’t the most practical solution, replacement may be the best option. This approach involves removing lead-contaminated surfaces (e.g., windows, doors, woodwork) and installing new materials. Depending on the materials involved, replacement can often be a more cost-effective solution than traditional removal.
At Orion, we’ll help you assess the best approach for your project, ensuring the safest and most efficient solution.
