Orion Environmental – Type II Hard Hat Roll Out
With the ever-changing climate of the construction industry, Orion Environmental Services is happy to have made the choice to safety above all else, with our company-wide roll out of Type II Hard Hats. So, what is the difference between a Type I and a Type II Hard Hat? And intimately what benefit do they offer the construction industry as a whole?
What exactly is a Type II Hard Hat and what benefit do they offer?
A Type II Hard Hat not only offers the standard four performance requirements as a Type I:
- Flammability
- Force Transmission
- Apex Penetration
- Electrical Classification
While Type II’s also must adhere to the additional following requirements:
- Impact Energy Attenuation
- Off-Center Penetration
- Chinstrap Retention
So why did we make the shift from Type I to Type II?
- Added protection for our employees as the Type II not only protects against impacts to the top of the head, but the sides as well.
- More comfort for our employees as Type II hats are designed for long-term ware and provide better ventilation as well as added security via their chin straps.
- We are looking to lead the way and set the safety example in the industry, and as more and more states and counties are begun to require the use of Type II hats, Orion took the initiative to be ahead of, not behind the curve.

Is the added cost actually worth the change?
The simple answer (and in Orion’s case, the only answer) is YES! Not only do these hats allow workers to be more comfortable while working they provide superior protection and functionality that ultimately lead to increased productivity, but by decreasing the risk of head and other injuries we put our employees first. When these benefits are combined together the cost truly becomes insignificant over a short amount of time.
What are your thoughts on the change? And what is your opinion on Orion’s continuing commitment to put safety first? Will you be making the change yourself?
