Loveland Historic Train Depot and Freight Building

In the coming weeks Orion Environmental will commence work on two historic buildings in Loveland, CO.

We are proud to be working with the City of Loveland to help preserve the two buildings that make up the remains of the Great Western Railway Train Depot.

The two structures (The Depot Building itself and the Freight Building) total approximately 2500 square feet and are single-story wooden buildings.

“The larger of the Loveland two depots was built in 1902, one of the many stops on the Great Western Railway. The smaller freight depot was built next to it in 1942, and, according to the Historical Society, is the only one of its kind still standing.” – Loveland Reporter Herald

The buildings are scheduled to be relocated to the adjoining lot, approximately sixty (60) feet to the south.  Once relocated, it will serve as a small museum and community space to educate the public about the importance of the railroad and sugar beet industry in Colorado.

“The city of Loveland, Colorado was literally built on sugar. In fact, by the turn of the century, the sugar industry had tripled Loveland’s population and continued to drive the local economy for 80 years. Even today, many Loveland residents either worked in the industry or have relatives who did.

Perhaps that’s why the Loveland Train Depot means so much to the community. The building represents more than simply transit. It is a physical representation of the community’s roots and what ties so many people together.

This project is about more than just preservation. It’s about adaptively reusing a historic building that represents the past to educate future generations. The depot’s special architecture will serve as more than a museum – it will be a community gathering place for the many people who were involved in making Loveland what it is today.” – BoettcherFoundation.org

As part of Phase 2 of this project Orion Environmental will be leading the effort to remove all hazardous materials (asbestos and lead) from the buildings themselves as well as performing a painter’s prep removal of loose and flaking LBP on the exterior wood surfaces and all surfaces with LBC (lead binding compound) paint/primer.

Following our work on this project, the City of Loveland will move forward with moving the buildings, allowing the following phases of the project to move forward.
