Up-Cycling for Education – Idaho Springs Building 103 Project

 

“Building 103 in the Clear Creek School District is a former high school and middle school that was renovated to house Carlson Elementary School, which was in an aging building with limited space. The renovation also created space for district offices and community spaces.

The new features of the building include classrooms, a gym, music rooms, a media center, a maker space, a kitchen, a cafeteria, and dining. The classrooms will have direct access to nature, daylighting, and interactive technology. The fourth floor now includes a performing arts center with a 300-seat main stage, a professional theater, a smaller theater for students, and a recording studio. In addition, the district also built a bus barn on the property. For this work to be completed a total overhaul of the existing building, 103, was required. Orion’s biggest contribution to this project was the large-scale Asbestos Abatement and Demolition.” Clear Creek Courant 

 

The project necessitated a multi-faceted approach to asbestos removal, encompassing surfacing material, floor tile, mastics, thermal system insulation, and exterior containments. The project involved managing exterior contaminants in mountain weather conditions, adding another layer of complexity that we successfully navigated.

 

Despite a 30% increase in the project’s scope, our Orion Environmental team efficiently removed over 180,000 square feet of materials, delivering the project on the original timeline.

 

With Man-Hours totaling 49,000 man-hours were invested in this project, with an unwavering focus on safety. One of the biggest challenges we faced was the ever changing and harsh weather conditions. Our team demonstrated resilience by navigating these extreme weather conditions, including temperatures as low as -20 degrees, in a building with no heat.
